Background: Australian rider Phil Crump -- holder of the Golden Helmet award -- battered the best riders of Britain into submission on Thursday night (10 April) to win the Spring Speedway Classic at Wimbledon, in London.
Crump scored 12 points in the five heats to win from 15 other world-class riders.
New Zealander Barry Briggs took second place with 11 points after a run-off against Englishman Peter Collins who also had 11 points.
Equal fourth -- who 10 points -- were Ole Olsen of Denmark, Terry Betts of England and Malcolm Simmons of England.
The ridders -- who included David Jessup, star of England's historic World Cup win in 1974, and Michanek of Sweden who is generally regarded as the Champion of the World -- battled through sleet and rain in Thursday's event.
