Background: Archbishop Makarios was filmed at a Press Conference, October 13, in Athens, when he reaffirmed his previous statement that he would accept an independent Cyprus.
He recently told Mrs. Barbara Castle, British Socialist M.P., that he would be prepared to give up his pleas for union with Greece if Cyprus were made completely independent.
The Archbishop made it clear on Monday that he would not consider any round table conference to be useful if it were confined to discussion of the detailed application of the British Government's plan. He said that once agreement had been reached on the final status of the island no great difficulties would be encountered in settling the details for the seven-year interim period of self-government.
He advocated a "genuine and democratic self-government for a seven-year period and not on the basis of Macmillan's partnership plan with foreign affairs and defence in British hands."
