• Short Summary

In Zambia, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe African People Union (ZAPU) guerrilla organisation has claimed Zimbabwe Rhodesia is spending more than a million dollars a day on its fight with the Patriotic Front guerrillas.

  • Description

CU: ZAPU Publicity Chief Whillie Musarurwa speaking in English and replaying to reporter's questions. (2 shots)

MUSARURWA: "The intention is to prove that Zambia is secure fore the so-called Commonwealth countries, and for the visit of the British Queen. This is the intention. These is no demoralisation, because the attacks are not directed at the soldiers of ZAPU, the attacks are directed at the refugees. People who are unarmed, defenceless, people who are innocent, people who run away, who escaped the tortures and destruction of their property by the Smith regime. These are the people against whom the attacks are directed, but of course propaganda says otherwise."

REPORTER: "Would you say that at the moment, the war in Zimbabwe is bitting ???ary hard?"

MUSARURWA: "It's bitting very hard, to be true, that the Rhodesian regime is printing over a million dollars a day to fight the freedom fighters. Over a million dollars a day, and this is causing the regime to be very, very unpopular because the money that should be used to build the schools, to give the people of Zimbabwe employment, to build more clinics, more hospitals, this money is used in the war and people remain as poor if not poorer than they were before. The people remain frustrated, if not more frustrated than before. So there is more disenchantment with the regime, there is more hatred for the regime at home. And when the regime flies its soldiers to Zambia, the intention is to capture the support of the people to show bravery, to raise the morale. Probably they may succeed in raising the morale of the whites, but they won't succeed in raising the morale of the blacks."

    REPORTER: "Why?"

MUSARURWA: "Because the blacks expect that since there is a black government as they have seen, they must see a dis???nable change in their status. Just like in any other country, any African country, when independence come, there is what we call a crisis of expectation, or the revolution of expectation.
Everybody believes that this life-style is going to change, but in Zimbabwe it's hot possible, because the money that should be used to give change to their life is being used for war. And in addition, the constitution under which the regime is operating leaves all power in the hands of the whites. All political power is in the hands of the whites, all economic power in the hands of the whites. This is why the police is run by the whites, the army is run by the whites, the civil service is run by the whites, and Rhodesia is still run by the whites, and the broadcasting up to this time, there is no African who broadcasts, all the general service, it's all whites. So no change, it's a preservation of the status quo, but with a black Prime Minister, who is in actual fact a megaphone."

Willie Musarurwa alleged in a news conference in Lusaka last week (4 July) that even after the recent elections in Zimbabwe Rhodesia the whites have managed to preserve the status quo. He said all power was still in the hands of the whites. Referring to the forthcoming Commonwealth conference and Queen Elizabeth's visit to Lusaka, Musarurwa said the Queen Elizabeth's visit to Lusaka, Musarurwa said the Queen and all delegates would be safe from guerrilla attacks.
