Background: SAN FRANCISCO GOTERA AND SAN SIMON, MORZAN PROVINCE, EL SALVADOR

El Salvador government troops in early April intensified their precautions against surprise attacks after at least 50 United States-trained soldiers were killed in an ambush in Morazan province. The losses were the heaviest suffered by any one battalion since the civil war began 411 months ago. The battle zone was centered on the provincial capital of San Francisco Gotera, about 100 kilometers north-east of San Salvador, where, on April 3, the army set up a road block to hinder any further guerilla movements. The troops were aided by US Army advisers, one of whom could be seen walking through a square in the town. Government sources claimed that the guerrillas involved in the fighting number more than 1500 and included Cubans and Nicaraguans. The guerrillas, who insisted they had wiped out an entire company of the US-trained Ramon Belloso Battalion, described the incident as a blow against United States war strategy. A military spokesman announced that in retaliation, the government troops were continuing to sweep northern areas of Morazan province; and many soldiers could be seen preparing for patrol duty. After the fighting in San Francisco Gotera was over, the local people mourned their dead by taking part in a candle-lit holy week procession. The soldiers who were ambushed were on their way to the hamlet of San Simon to aid the defence there. Fourteen men of the San Simon forces were killed as they tried to ward off the guerrillas, who later took control of the town. After the fighting was over, local people gathered in the hamlet's main square and the women wailed at the deaths of their husbands and loved ones.
