    Background: Thousands of students demonstrated in Paris on Friday (19 February) as a court heard the appeal of an 18-year-old student. His jailing sparked a wave of student unrest which has been the most serious since the riots of 1968. The students defied a police ban on demonstrations to demand the release of Gilles Guiot who was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on charges of punching a policeman during a demonstration.

    Later on Friday, the court acquitted young Guiot -- acting against a background of allegations by a prominent Gaullist politician that French magistrates had shown cowardice in dealing with militant students and other agitators.
