Background: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Bengali leader returned in triumph to Dacca yesterday as President of the newly created Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of people crowded Dacca Airport hours before the Royal Air Force Comet carrying Sheikh Mujib was due to touch down. All available police and soldiers were called out to control the huge crowd. When the British aircraft touched down an enormous roar went up. Sheikh Mujib came back after nine and a half months of imprisonment in Pakistan. A twenty one gun salute boomed out as the 51 year old leader stepped onto the soil of his new state for the first time since his arrest last March. Traditional flower garlands were thrown round his neck as cries of Joibangla (victory to Bengal) thundered around the airport. Sheikh Mujib flew in from New Delhi where he met Indian leader Indira Gandhi for talks. The welcome in the Indian capital was the biggest ever accorded a visitor, but nothing compared to the arrival on Dacca. From the airport, Sheikh Mujib drove through the city to attend a huge rally. Thousands of people lined the streets and motorcade made slow progress. Later Sheikh Mujib told the rally that the new nation of Bangladesh was born out of war between India and Pakistan and would have no links with West Pakistan. He said the old links had snapped for all time.
