Background: The opening ceremony took place inside the huge Tumut Three Power Station. Among those present was Sir Williams McKell, who as Governor General in 1949 turned the first sod to mark the beginning of work on the Snowy Schema. One of the speakers at the ceremony was the Minister for National Development, Sir Reginald Schwartz.

Before throwing the switch which turned on two of the generators, Sir Paul Hasluck spoke about the significance of the Snowy Scheme.
