Background: A Soviet economic delegation arrived in Damascus on Tuesday (6 March) for talks aimed at promoting Soviet-Syrian technological ties.
SYNOPSIS: The Soviet delegation's visit to Damascus coincided with a visit by Yasser Arafat -- head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation -- to Moscow. Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad visited Moscow last month and held talks with Kremlin officials on ways to boost his country's defence and economic power. Reuters report that the talks between Soviet and Syrian authorities were scheduled to focus on the promotion of economic and technological co-operation between the two countries, as well as the current situation in the Middle East. Syria leads an Arab rejection front opposed to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's recent Middle East peace initiatives, which have also been rejected by the Soviet Union.
