Background: MORE THAN 99 PER CENT OF THE POLE OF GUINEA VOTED IN FAVOUR OF PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE CONTINUING IN OFFICE FOR A FURTHER SEVEN YEARS, IN ELECTIONS WHICH TOOK PLACE ON MONDAY. AMONG THOSE WHO WENT TO THE POLLS WAS PRESIDENT TOURE HIMSELF, WHO RECORDED HIS VOTE IN HIS HOME TOWN OF DALABA, 250 MILES (400 KMS) FROM THE GUINEA CAPITAL OF CONAKRY.

AFTER HIS MASSIVE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE, PRESIDENT TOURE IS ON A TOUR OF THE GUINEA INTERIOR AND IS EXPECTED TO RETURN TO THE CAPITAL ON JANUARY 10, WHEN THE COUNTRY'S NEW PARLIAMENT WILL HOLD ITS FIRST SESSION.

OFFICIAL RESULTS OF MONDAY'S ELECTIONS SHOWED THAT 99.7 PER CENT OF GUINEA'S TWO-MILLION VOTERS CAST THEIR BALLOT IN FAVOUR OF THE PRESIDENT, THE ONLY CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE. PRESIDENT TOURE HAS BEEN GUINEA'S PRESIDENT SINCE THE COUNTRY GAINED INDEPENDENCE IN 1958.

AS WELL AS VOTING FOR THE 45-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT, THE VOTERS ALSO RETURNED TO POWER THE GUINEA DEMOCRATIC PARTY, OF WHICH PRESIDENT TOURE IS THE LEADER.
