Background: A small band of pickets paraded outside a Vancouver, Canada, hotel Aug. 8 to protest the appearance of the Peking Opera Company at the Vancouver Arts Festival. Leaflets were also circulated in the Chinese community suggesting that members of the company defect while in Canada. Officials of the five-hundred year old company were not disturbed by the reception however. Special security measures have not been requested for the company's entire Canadian tour.
When the company arrived in Vancouver after a train journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia, they were welcomed by the mayor and officials of the Vancouver Festival. A large delegation from the Chinese community was also present with a large bouquet of flowers for each member of the company. There are ninety people in the company-making its first visit to North America after a tour of Latin America.
