Background: Algerian-backed polisario Front guerrillas displayed last week-end (23/24 September) Moroccan arms and prisoners captured during an ambush near the Moroccan garrison town of Zak. The Polisario, fighting Morocco for an independent Sahara, claimed King Hassan could not resolve the problem by military means as his army was collapsing.

SYNOPSIS: The Polisario reported that six hundred and fifty Moroccan troops were killed and as many wounded in an ambush on two Moroccan columns. Morocco hasn't co??? the ???.

The captured military equipment included more than one hundred and fifty vehicles, including three Franco-Austrian tanks and three Soviet-made SAM-7 missile launchers.

These were shown to newsmen in the western Algerian town of Tindouf. According to a Polisario leader, Egypt recently delivered Soviet MIG fighters to Morocco. Ibrahim Ghali, "Defence Minister" of the Polisario proclaimed Republic, said that whatever the volume of Egypt's aid to Morocco, it would not change the course of the war.

According to the Polisario, this attack showed that the people of the Western Sahara were determined to strike deeply inside Moroccan borders.

The identification documents of captured Moroccan soldiers serving what Mr. Ghali called the "expansionist regime of Rabat", were laid out for viewing.

The Polisario Defence Minister said that fifteen of the eighty Franco-Austrian tanks Morocco received last year, were now destroyed. He also claimed that French Mirage fighters supplied to Morocco in a deal three years ago were now being used in what he called Morocco's colonial expansion.

Morocco annexed the territory given up by Mauritania last month, after Mauritania had signed a peace agreement with the Polisario.

Mr. Ghali reiterated to newsmen the Polisario's call for direct negotiation with Morocco under the auspices of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
