Background: Dockyard tradesmen working on the aircraft carrier "Melbourne" at Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour are pressing ahead with the big task of getting the flagship of the Australian Fleet back into commission
As the welders cut away the crumpled steel, the twisted bulkheads and buckled deckplates revealed the crushing force of the blow which cut the destroyer "Voyager" in two eight days ago, near Jervis Bay. So far the high-temperature cutting torches have sliced away about 20 tons of an estimated 140 tons of jagged steel plate.

As the broken section of the hull is being cut back workmen inside the ship have been clearing the way for temporary deck plating. This work is going on while other Dockyard tradesmen are fabricating a new bow section which will weigh 80 tons. This will be lifted into place by a giant crane and the "Melbourne" will be floated into position for the fitting.

Some of the temporary decking was lifted into the ship today through the big opening left by the cutting torches. Before the big carrier is re-floated, a makeshift bow section will be fitted to deal in the gaping area.
