INTRODUCTION: Horse racing...and a thoroughbred with an apt name -- I'm Glad -- has won a classic in the Argentina calendar, the Carlos Pellegrini Grand Prix International.

SYNOPSIS: This race, for three-year-olds, is called the Argentine Derby.It's held at the Hipodromo de San Isidro in the capital, a venue that can hold up to 200,000 people.

There was a field of 19 starters for the race over 2,400 metres.Among then was the highly-favoured Campero, which had never previously been beaten.It was to run a fine race that deceived many of the spectators, who thought their bets were safe, especially as it led galloping smoothly in front of the main stands.

But I'm Glad had been shrewdly ridden by jockey Jorge Valdivieso, and came home by two lengths from Especulante, with Campeto third, another two lengths away.

Jockey Valdivieso, a modest soul, was to say afterwards his splendid victory should bring him some public acclaim.Indeed even those who had lost their money on the beaten favourite warmly acknowledged a fine piece of horsemanship.

And none smiled more broadly than the owner of I'm Glad, Senor Jose Abrega, and its trainers from the Santa Maria de Araras stable.
