SALIM: The purpose of the conference is to mobilise world public opinion at the situation in those territories, resulting from the continued oppression and domination of their peoples by the colonialist and racist, minority regimes of Salisbury and Pretoria. And to arouse worldwide support for an assistance to the people of Zimbabwe and Namibia led by the liberation movements in the struggle for self-determination and independence. It is in a sense therefore a consolidation conference of the forces opposed to colonialism and racism in southern Africa.



He then talked about voting at the conference.



As far as the voting pattern, first let me say that it will be our honest endeavour to try and avoid a situation where voting becomes necessary in Maputo. I say that this is a consolidation conference, a conference which is geared to try and mobilise all the forces that are opposed to the regimes in southern Africa.



So, to the extent possible, we will try to come out with positions of agreement among the participants. If however it proves to be impossible, of course this conference, the U.N. conference and the usual rules of procedure will apply. Now, who is going to vote, how many countries will vote, it will depend exactly on the number of participants.

Background: The forthcoming conference on southern African problems, which opens in Mozambique later this month, will be a consolidation conference of the forces opposed to colonialism and racism in southern Africa, Tanzania's United Nations ambassador said on Monday (2 May). Mr Salim A. Salim, who's chairman of the U.N. Special Committee on decolonisation, was speaking to reporters at a news media briefing at the United Nations. The conference will be held in Mozambique's capital Maputo, beginning on May the 16th. One of the guest speakers will be the U.N.'s Secretary-General, Kurt Waldheim. Mr Salim discussed what he hoped the meeting will achieve.
