Background: Hell's Canyon Dam, on the Snake River -- the boundary separating the States of Or???gon and Idaho -- was where recent scientific experiments were started to determine certain river characteristics. The experiments were scheduled to last one week and a 70-member team of scientists, biologists and other experts took part. Seventeen Federal, State and local agencies were involved in the study, as well as many volunteers.
The United States Federal Power Commission granted permission for the alteration of water flow through the hydro-electric facility at Hell's Canyon Dam. The aim was to drastically alter the flow of water and to stabilise it at various levels for this stretch of river. By doing this, the experts could evaluate the effects of maximum water fluctuations on a major river system.
Snake River is one of the United States' most ??? riv???. The mountain p???k??? around the river ???? 9,000 feet above the ???nyon. The difficult nature of the terrain meant that Army helicopters had to be used to provide the back-up for the study team.
The scientists hope to document the effects of fluctuations in stream flow on all forms of river life. The results of the study will not be known for at least a year.
