Background: Egyptian riot police occupied the Bulgarian embassy in Cairo, following an unusual incident which caused Egypt to break diplomatic relations with Bulgarian. It has been alleged that an Egyptian family refused to vacate their flat in the embassy building. The dispute climaxed when embassy staff allegedly beat the mother and her two daughters following an argument. Within minutes hundreds of Egyptians gathered outside the embassy, protesting the beatings. Two days later Egyptian riot police stormed the embassy. One embassy guard said he fired three warning shots into the ground to disperse a crowd.

SYNOPSIS: Egyptian police and soldiers surrounded the Bulgarian embassy on orders from President Sadat, who said they were to safeguard the dignity of the three Egyptian women. The Bulgarian news agency accused the police of ransacking the building and preventing the normal operation of the embassy. The Bulgarian government said the action was unprecedented in international affairs and diplomatic practice.

The Bulgarians also accused the egyptians of staging the demonstration. They said only a planned protest could attract hundreds of Egyptians shouting anti-Bulgarian slogans in a short time. The Bulgarian ambassador, Mr. Georgi Vladikov spoke to reporters.
