    Background: HONG KONG

Ecuador's Andres Gomez won the Hong Kong Grand Prix with a straight sets with over Czechoslovakia's Tomas Smid on October 28. Gomez, ranked fifth in the world, picked up 50,000 dollars (40,000 pounds) prize money for his victory Gomez (wearing a blue shirt with yellow stripe) controlled the match from the start with a combination of fierce ground strokes and perfectly placed top-spin lobs to which Smid had no answer. Smid played with the aggression and commitment which brought him to the final but the superior technique of Gomez meant that the Czech was always fighting a losing battle. Gomez took the first set by six games to three, and raced to a five-love lead in the second. Smid broke serve and pulled back two games before Gomez wrapped up the match. As thought to add insult to injury Gomez scored the winning point with a might serve as Smid flailed helplessly. After the match Smid acknowledged the superiority of his opponent saying "He didn't miss anything ....that's why he won so easily."
