Background: Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 6-2 in the second leg of the World Cup Football preliminaries in the Nigerian capital, Lagos, on Saturday (30 October). The two teams played a scoreless draw in the first leg at Freetown, Sierra Leone a fortnight before.

SYNOPSIS: The first half. Sierra Leone, in white, kicking from left to right. From the start Nigeria went into attack, cheered on by a 30,000-strong crowd. The World Cup finals will be held in Argentina in 1978 and Federation Internationale Football Associations - FIFA - has already received more than 30 entries from countries all over the world.

Nigeria attacking again. Into the goal area and an attempt for a first goal. But the Sierre Leone goalkeeper was ready for it.

Corner to Nigeria, brilliantly converted to the team's first goal by a header off Segun Odegbami.

Sierre Leone kicks off. But it wasn't long before Nigeria gained possession and headed back into their goal mouth. The opposition goalkeeper was kept busy. One attempt, closely followed by another. Then success, and Nigeria's second goal.

Really getting into their stride now, it wasn't long before the home side scored its third goal.

Nigeria attacking again at the goal. But a cross is successfully held by the Sierra Leone defence.

Another try went right over the bar.

In recent years soccer has gained enormous popularity in Nigeria and this year the national side has met many top class overseas teams. In Saturday's match its fourth goal came just before half time and the last two shortly after they returned after the break.
