Background: Delegates from various countries attended a 22nd anniversary celebration of the Arab League in Tokyo. The League, which has headquarters in Cairo, was set up in 1945.

This year's anniversary celebrations in the Hotel Okure, were held under the auspices of Mohamed Salaf Eldin Farid, director of the Arab League in Tokyo. More than 500 Japanese and foreign dignitaries were invited. They included ambassadors from Arab countries such as Morocco, Kuwait, the United Arab Republic, Libya, Tunis, Algeria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

One of the chief Japanese guests was Ken Harada, the grand master of ceremonies in the Japanese Imperial household.

The League grew out of a conference held in Alexandria in 1944 which laid down the lines for the League's future role. On March 22, 1945 a covenant was signed in Cairo setting up the League. The League operates within the framework of the United Nations to which its secretary-general is admitted as an observer.
