Background: THE GREW OF THE IVORY COAST TRAWLER "MAFOU" WERE LUCKY TO ESCAPE DEATH EARLIER THIS WEEK WHEN THE BOAT WAS CAUGHT IN A FIERCE STORM NOT FAR FROM THE COAST.

THE CAPTAIN OF THE VESSEL, TANO ATTAH MARCELLIN, TOOK THE ONLY ACTION POSSIBLE TO SAVE HIS CREW AND MANAGED TO BEACH THE BOAT ON THE WHITE SANDS AT LES TROIS COCOTIERS, SOME 15 MILES (25 KMS) SOUTH OF ABIDJAN.

HIS PROMPT ACTION SAVED THE LIVES OF HIS TEN-MAN CREW, ALTHOUGH FOUR SAILORS WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE CREW INCLUDED A SPANISH MASTER FISHERMAN AND A SENEGALESE HELMSMAN.

THE "MAFOU" WAS VERY BADLY DAMAGED IN THE STORM. IT NOW LIES ON THE SHORE WITH THE WAVES BREAKING OVER IT. THE SHORE AT THE POINT ON THE COAST LOOKS ONE OF THE MOST INVITING IN THE WORLD WITH ITS BEAUTIFUL WHITE SAND AND COCONUT TREES, BUT IN FACT ITS NOTORIOUSLY DANGEROUS AND NOBODY RISKS SWIMMING THERE.
