Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir held talks in Jerusalem on January 6 with United States Special Envoy Donald Rumsfeld and Republican Senator John Tower. The Prime Minister was expected to discuss a possible rapprochement between Washington and Damascus, following Syria's release of captured US airman Robert Goodman on January 3.Israel has shown signs of acquiescing to some continued Syrian military presence in Lebanon, despite earlier assertions that all foreign troops had to leave Lebanon before Israel withdrew from the south.Details of the Jerusalem talks were sketchy; both Rumsfeld and Tower, chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, declined to comment afterwards. As Middle East peace talks continued.Beirut experienced another day of heavy shelling.State-run Beirut Radio said one Lebanese Army soldier was killed in shelling on Khalde township, south of Beirut airport. The shellfire came from Druze Moslem positions in the mountains and caused a number of casualties among Lebanese Army personnel as well as civilians.
