Background: WHEN A DOZEN PUPS ARRIVED TO THE ST.BERNARD DOG LYDIA, OWNED BY M. CLEMENT HE IMMEDIATELY CLAIMED THE WORLD RECORD FOR THE FEAT. AS FAR IS KNOWN, NO ST. BERNARD HAS EVER PRODUCED SO MANY AT ONE CONFINEMENT.

    M. CLEMENT RUNS A SMALL HOTEL AT CHEVRY COSSIGNY - SO THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE PANIC OVER THE PROSPECT OF ONE DAY FEEDING THE TWELVE PUPS WHO WILL EVENTUALLY STAND ALMOST THREE FEET HIGH AND HIGH AS MUCH AS 16 STONE. THEY WILL NEED ABOUT 4 OR 5 POUNDS OF MEAT A DAY - EACH.

THE ST.BERNARDS WERE ORIGINALLY BRED BY THE MONKS AT THE HOSPICE OF ST. BERNARD IN THE SWISS ALPS DURING THE 17TH CENTURY. THE MONKS AND THEIR LAY BROTHERS, HELPED BY THE DOGS, BECAME FAMOUS FOR THE HELP THEY GAVE TO LOST TRAVELLERS - PARTICULARLY TO ITALIAN WORKMEN USING THE PASS INTO FRANCE.
