Background: Japan's Foreign Minister, Masayoshi Ohira, met with President Nixon and Secretary of State William Rogers in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (18 October) to discuss the newly-forged diplomatic relations between Japan and The People's Republic of China.

After meeting with Mr Rogers at the State Department, Mr Ohira went on to the White house where he met with the U.S. President for almost an hour.

The White House meeting was also attended by General Alexander Haig, presidential adviser on national security affairs, and by ambassador Nobuhiko.

Press Secretary Ronald Ziagler later said President Nixon stressed "the importance the United States attaches to remaining in close contact with the Japanese in regard to security in Southeast Asia", and repeated the importance which the United States attaches to its relations to Japan as its major Asian ally.

Other topics of discussion included the Vietnam peace outlook and Japan's plans to aid in the reconstruction programma in Indo-China after the Vietnam war is settled.
