Background: YET ANOTHER MALE BASTION HAS FALLEN -- THE SOUTH POLE. SIX WOMEN FROM THE UNITED STATES AND NEW ZEALAND, WHO ARE ON A SCIENTIFIC SURVEY IN ANTARCTICA, RECENTLY BECAME THE FIRST FEMALE VISITORS TO POLE.

THE PARTY MAD SUCCEEDED IN BREAKING DOWN THE RESISTANCE OF THE U.S. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION TO THE IDEA OF WOMEN WORKING FROM AMERICAN BASES IN THE ANTARCTIC.

FOUR OF THE TEAM COME FROM OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY -- MRS. HAY LINDSAY, DR. LOIS JONES, MRS. EILEEN MCSERVINEY AND MISS TERRY TICKHILL. COMPLETING THE GROUP ARE DETROIT NEWS REPORTER JEAN PEARSON AND NEW ZEALANDER MRS. PAM YOUNG FROM CHRISTCHURCH UNIVERSITY.

NO INDIVIDUAL MEMBER OF THE TEAM CAN CLAIM TO BE THE FIRST WOMAN AT THE POLE. THEY ALL STEPPED FROM THE RAMP OF THEIR HERCULES AIRCRAFT TOGETHER. THEN, ESCORTED BY AN ADMIRAL, OFFICIALS AND NEWSMEN, THEY WALKED THE REMAINING 200 YARDS TO THE POLE.

THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD IS MARKED WITH A BARBER'S POLE.

THE WOMEN POSED FOR PICTURES BESIDE IT IN TEMPERATURES OF NEARLY 50 DEGREES ZERO. BEFORE LEAVING, THEY FORMED THE SOUTH POLE WOMEN'S CLUB -- EACH TAKING THE OFFICE OF VICE-PRESIDENT.
