    SYNOPSIS: The Claude Robillard Centre, a gigantic multisport complex contains a number of outdoor game areas as well as indoor facilities
    Construction of this versatile centre is almost completed and the interior accommodations will be ready by spring
    The outdoor track, measuring 400 meters, will be used principally for training athletes
    From these grandstands during the Olympic Games, some two thousand spectators will be able to watch a complete athletic program
    Inside the Claude Robillard Centre, there is a double gymnasium and a multisport theatre where the handball preliminaries will be held. On the other side, the Olympic pool will be used in the waterpolo elimination trials as well as for swimming practice. Equipped with a movable bridge, the pool can be divided into two sections of twenty five meters each and one of these is outfitted with a mobile floor
    In all there are seven diving boards: the diving tower, equipped with a staircase and an elevator dominates the area. The diving pool itself measures twenty-five by twenty-five meters
    Two thousand five hundred spectators will be able to attend the Olympic waterpolo matches
    As for the regear swimming competitions, they will be held in the pool at the olympic stadium
    The Claude Robillard Centre will be the largest training area for the athletes during the Games
    The Etienne Desmarteau Centre, located three kilometres away from the Olympic Village, will be used chiefly for the basketball elimination matches. It will also be used as a practice area for the athletes
    The main arena of this multisport complex is on the ground floor where the basketball games can be watched by 5000 spectators. The ground level of this vast gymnasium will be covered by a maple wood floor. Near the entrance to the grandstands is another gymnasium and workout area for athletes to train in
    At the Olympic stadium, work continues despite the inclement winter weather
    The main operation presently underway is the hoisting into position of these segments of the mechanical and electrical service ring
    Consisting of three pre-fabricated, pre-assembled and pre-equipped elements, each section weighs approximately 130 tons
    Carried by a giant crane, these immense sections will be hoisted up some fifty meters and attached to support brackets at the end of each beam
    Connected together, these sections will form a gallery of electrical and mechanical components 480 meters long that will bind together the whole structure
    The slow hoisting of a section demands the most precisely controlled efforts so that it can be accurately guided into place at the tip of the forward beam
    Workers in the gondola coordinate the operations through radio-communication
    Now the section will be positioned through means of a cables, pulled tightly, and then an epoxy adhesive will ensure the complete joining of all the surfaces in contact with one another
    The electro -mechanical service ring, seven meters in diameter, is divided into two passageways where the heating and ventilation controls are installed as well as an artificial lighting system of the highest technical development
    With the addition of the mobile roof which is operated from its circumference, the electro-mechanical ring makes possible the creation of a true micro-climate under the vault of the stadium during all seasons of the year. It will mark the first combined application of these various system in a stadium of such outstanding size
