Background: AS A RESULT OF THE ELECTIONS HELD IN MAURITIUS LAST MONDAY, THE LABOUR PARTY LOST ITS OVERALL MAJORITY IN THE 40-SEAT LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY.BUT IT WAS ANNOUNCED LATER THAT THE LABOUR PARTY WILL FORM THE NEST GOVERNMENT WITH THE AID OF ITS ALLY, THE COMITE D'ACTION MUSULMEN.

THE ELECTION RESULTS ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY SHOWED THAT LABOUR'S SEATS DROPPED FROM 24 TO 19, BUT THE COMITE D'ACTION MUSULMAN RETAINED 4 OF ITS 5 SEATS TO ENABLE LABOUR TO STAY IN POWER.TOGETHER, THE TWO PARTIES SCORED 49 PER CENT OF THE TOTAL VOTES CAST.

DR.RAMGOOLAM, LEADER OF THE LABOUR PARTY AND CHIEF MINISTER, STATED BEFORE THE ELECTION THAT HE WOULD SEEK SUPPORT ON THE ISSUE OF INDEPENDENCE.HIS PARTY WAS NOT IN FAVOR OF NATIONALISATION, BUT WOULD PRESS FOR A MORE EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF THE NATIONAL REVENUE.AFTER INDEPENDENCE, HE WAS CONFIDENT OF THE FUTURE OF MAURITIUS WHICH WOULD REMAIN IN THE COMMONWEALTH.

THE CHIEF MINISTER RETURNED FROM WASHINGTON IN AUGUST AFTER THE SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION OF A LOAN OF 34 MILLION RUPEES (2,550,000 STERLING) FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT.
