President Gerald Ford tries out the new White House swimming pool.
If nothing else, President Gerald Ford intends to be the fittest man to live in the White House. An athlete with a good record in his younger days, the President on Sunday (July 6) tried out the latest addition to the White House in Washington, a new full-sized outdoor pool.
The President said he intends to swim forty lengths of the pool twice a day.
There was a pool in the White House before. It was an indoor one and President Nixon had it filled in to make room for a Press Centre. The money for the new pool, which cost around forty-thousand dollars (30 thousand sterling) was raised by public subscription.
President Ford only made a few laps during his first swim watched by about 70 reporters and Cameramen.
He said it was a nicer pool the one in his Virginia home.
