Background: If nothing else, President Gerald Ford intends to be the fittest man to live in the White House. An athlete with a good record in his younger days, the President on Sunday (July 6) tried out the latest addition to the White House in Washington, a new full-sized outdoor pool.
The President said he intends to swim forty lengths of the pool twice a day.
There was a pool in the White House before. It was an indoor one and President Nixon had it filled in to make room for a press Centre. The money for the new pool, it cost around ???C-thousand dollars (30 thousand sterling) was raised by public subscription.
President Ford only made a few laps during his first swim watched by about 70 reporters and Cameramen.
He said it was a nicer pool the one in his Virginia home.
