Background: The symbolic sketch of the Kiwi is better known than the kiwi itself. But this is one of the unlikely birds filmed in the fastness of the Auckland Zoo. There are four varieties of kiwis, all very similar and all with quite impossible scientific names ..Apteryx Mantelli .. and so on.

The kiwi can't stand to be out in the open in the daylight -- and will run for any cover. The bird cannot fly, for the same reason as its relatives, the emu and the cassowary -- it has no wings worthy of the name. This is one of the features that has made it a rarity because during the early settlement of New Zealand, vast tracts of country were burned off; and the kiwis could not move as fast as the flames. Moreover, it lays only on e egg a year, and isn't likely to multiply rapidly. It lives on grubs and if attacked by something larger emits a harsh cry and runs away, like this....
