Background: SEVERAL THOUSAND DUTCH IMMIGRANTS TO SOUTH AFRICA BURST INTO THE GROUNDS OF THE DUTCH AMBASSADOR'S HOUSE IN PRETORIA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). THEY SHOUTED PROTESTS AGAINST THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO "AID THE VICTIMS OF APARTHEID."
DEMONSTRATORS CONVERGED ON PRETORIA FROM SEVERAL POINTS IN THE TRANSVAAL WHERE THERE ARE ABOUT 30,000 DUTCH IMMIGRANTS. ABOUT 150 CARS WITH "WE PROTEST" STICKERS ON THEIR WINDSCREEN LED THE PROCESSION TO THE CITY.

THE DUTCH FLAG WAS PULLED DOWN FROM A FLAGPOLE BY THE IMMIGRANTS WHO THEN SANG PATRIOTIC SONGS AND WAVED PLACARDS FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR BEFORE LEAVING. ONLY REPEATED REQUESTS FROM POLICE AND DEMONSTRATION ORGANISERS TO "SAVE THE GOOD NAME OF SOUTH AFRICA" BROUGHT ABOUT A SLOW MOVEMENT AWAY FROM THE SCENE.

DR. H. A. HALB, THE AMBASSADOR, LOCKED HIMSELF INSIDE THE RESIDENCE, REFUSING TO RESPOND TO DEMANDS THAT HE SHOULD EXPLAIN HIS GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO ALLOT 100,000 GUILDERS TO THE DEFENCE AND AID FUND. THIS ORGANISATION PROVIDE LEGAL AID FOR PEOPLE CHARGED UNDER SOUTH AFRICA'S SABOTAGE LAWS.

IN AN ATTEMPT TO STAGE A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION A LONE DUTCHWOMAN FROM JOHANNESBURG MARCHED WITH A PLACARD SUPPORTING THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT. SHE WAS ROUGHLY FROG-MARCHED AWAY BY THE IMMIGRANTS, LOSING A SHOE AND HER SPECTACLES IN THE SCRIMMAGE. YOUTHS SHOUTED AT HER, "GO BACK TO HOLLAND," AND "GO AND JOIN THE COMMUNISTS."
