MR. EL FARRA: SEQ 3: "It is not only the neighbours (INDISTINCT) which are in danger, but world security. For Israel has ben deliberately rising the conflict and throwing (INDISTINCT) powers into its arena. Therefore, Mr. President, the view are taking is very grave. Either this General Assembly asks the local powers for peace or abdicates its responsibility. We have enough confidence that this won't be true of the latter, because members here are not opposing. Mr. President we are happy to see (INDISTINCT) recognising the rights of the Arab people of Palestine. In our search for peace justice must be resultant. For we shall no find a final settlement unless it is a just one, and we have a just settlement in our area which says the people of Palestine should no longer be ruled. It is in the interests of peace, it is in the interests of (INDISTINCT) that we should define the problems and conflicts that are confronting us."

MR. EL XAYYAT: SEQ 5: "Mr. President, we accept, indeed, we demand a settlement in accordance with the United Nations charter. We accept, indeed we demand a settlement in accordance with the U.N. resolution. We accept every single resolution passed by this Assembly or by the Security Council about the problem of the Middle East Provided they are accepted in total by all others concerned. This is our simple stated terms and therefore, whatever the United States has accused Egypt of doing about its seeking fulfilments in accordance with the charter should not prevent the Assembly from demanding that its will be reflected and its resolution implemented."

Background: Diplomats at the United Nations are trying to produce a new compromise resolution on the Middle East after five days of often acrimonious debate in the General Assembly. The Assembly is now in weekend recess, but before the closing session on Friday two opposing resolutions had been presented for consideration. Nineteen members of the Afro-Asian group have presented a resolution calling for the General Assembly to recognisee the 'inadmissibility of the acquisition of territories by force'.

In his speech in the debate, the Jordanian delegate, Mr. El Farra, called for recognition of the rights of the people of Palestine. The U.A.R. delegate, Mr. El Xayyat, said his country would accept a peace settlement based on a General Assembly resolution.
