Background: St. Mark's Square, the Palace des Doges, and the ancient Prison house were decked with flags this morning for the start of the gondolers "race of the century". This race is only open to professional gondolers, in pairs, and the combined age of the pair must be more than 100 years.

This regatta is the first event of the season which culminated in the world famed 'Historical Regatta'. It is dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of the gondoliers and the city of Venice.

The contestants wear the traditional striped journey and the black bandeau round the forehead.
