Background: The excitement and pageantry of Pisa's "Gioco del Ponte" - a contest between the two sectors of the city divided by the River Arno - was filmed recently by Visnews.
Origin on the contest - an occasion for general festivities and merrymaking is lost in antiquity, but it received its present name in 1400, and Lorenzo il Magnifico decreed that large shields known as "targoni" should be used, and the contest itself should be 'fought out' on the Ponte di Mezzo.
Each half of the city parades along the gaily decorated banks of the Arno and chooses a large team from which ten combatants are selected. A challenge is hurled amidst flag waving, peals of clarions and rolls of drums. A large gun goes off, bells start ringing, and teo teams of five try to defeat each other by pushing a cart, running on rails, across the bridge to the opposite side of the river The warriors wear breast plates and helmets, and five 'jousts' on the bridge decide the winners of the match,
This year, there was an unofficial contest - fists flying in every direction - when the two team captains objected to the judges' decision.
