Background: POLICE TODAY (THURSDAY) S??? UP STRUGGLING BANDS OF STUDENTS IN THE THIRD DAY OF LANGUAGE CLASHES AT THE 500-YEAR OLD CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN LOUVAIN. THE CONTROVERSY OVER WHICH LANGUAGE SHOULD BE SPOKEN HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS. THE UNIVERSITY IS A BILINGUAL INSTITUTION IN THE FLEMISH - SPEAKING PART OF BELGIUM, AND THE FLEMISH SECTION WANTS THE FRENCH SECTION TRANSFERRED TO NEARBY WAVRE, ON THE FRENCH SPEAKING SIDE OF THE LINGUISTIC BORDER WHICH DIVIDES THE COUNTRY.

THE DEMONSTRATING FLEMISH STUDENTS BURST INTO LECTURE HALLS AND INTERRUPTED COURSES BEING GIVEN IN FRENCH.

STUDENTS FROM BOTH LANGUAGE GROUPS SQUIRTED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AT ONE ANOTHER AND ONE FLEMISH STUDENT WAS INJURED IN THE CLASHES.

THE FLEMISH STUDENTS CALLED ON FLEMISH PROFESSORS TO SUPPORT THEIR ACTION, WHICH FOLLOWS A STATEMENT BY THE FRENCH SECTION OF THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY SAYING IT INTENDS TO MAINTAIN FRENCH COURSES.

THE FLEMISH PROFESSORS HAVE ALREADY SAID THE WHOLE FRENCH SECTION SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINGUISTIC BORDER.

POLICE ARRESTED ABOUT 150 PEOPLE AFTER DEMONSTRATIONS ON THE SAME ISSUE LAST NIGHT.
