Background: United States Customs and Immigration officials are observing strict security precautions at Canadian frontier checkpoints. Normally cars would flow through this checkpoint on the main Montreal-to-New York City highway very quickly, but now, because of the crisis created by the militant separatist movement, the Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ), every car is being carefully checked.
All the cars entering the United States from Canada are stopped, searched, and the drivers questioned. This procedure was started last Friday (October 16). Security is so tight, the authorities would not allow their line of questioning to be recorded.
The inspectors are looking for any evidence that might link people in the cars with the F.L.Q. The American inspectors have memorised the known numbers of car licence plates belonging to members of the Front.
Away from the main highway, along the small secondary roads t hat cross the border, special law enforcement teams watch for any illegal traffic. The teams could not be filmed but they were there, and they were armed.
