TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 2): President: "As soon as our railway is built, thank goodness we have friends, in Chinese people who have agreed to construct our railway, we're constructing this with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania. As soon as the railway is built we will be more free to do as we please, to buy from where we wish. Again the world must appreciate our stand here. We have been tough. No country has faced as many problems as Zambia has faced at its independence. Very few if any. Yet the Zambian people have shown steel nerves. They've defeated obstacle after obstacle, including spies and saboteurs. We've fought all these things until now we are on the verge of success. Praise is what we want, not condemnation. And so as time goes on we'll be getting away from this trade with South Africa. We are determined. When we give our pledge we give it honestly and sincerely. In spite of these difficulties we are going to reduce our trade with South Africa as time goes on."

Reporter: "One paper has reported that the non-aligned conference was not non-aligned because it criticised only the West and not the East."

President: "The best way of answering this question is by repeating what I said in my opening remarks. If the People's Republic of China, if the USSR, should take the place of the West and begin pouring in investments into South Africa, we'll criticise China, we'll criticise Russia without reserve. It's as clear as that. If instead of Portugal, a Nato member, we shall have Poland, a Warsaw Pact member, take the place of Portugal in Angola and Mozambique and Guinea Bissau, Poland will see fireworks from non-aligned countries. If in place of Britain we had Rumania, Rumania would receive the same fireworks as we have given to Britain. If we had any other country from the East speaking in the same line, we would condemn them vigorously. Who does not know hare that when Russia went into Czechoslovakia and invaded, most non-aligned countries criticised Russia. We did that without reserve. We have gone on record as saying that. So what are you talking about?. It's absolute nonsense and I dismiss it with the contempt it deserves."
