Background: In bright sunshine, with a chilly north-westerly breeze, Henley Royal Regatta got under way, June 29, with a full programme of nearly sixty events.

Outstanding performance was by Harvard, who beat Isis in the first Thames Cup heat by three-quarters of a length in the record time of 6min 39 secs. This beats the previous best, set up in 1953 by Princeton, by six seconds.

Surprisingly, it was the American crew which led off the start, soon pulling half a length ahead. Isis fought back gallantly, at one time striking 38 to the Americans' 32. The distance narrowed considerably, when Harvard raised their rating to 34. Then their longer stroke carried them steadily away to victory.

Another fast time was recorded in the Thames Cup, in the all-American heat, when Detroit Boat Club's strong crew held their own against Tabor Academy to win in 6min 49secs.

In the Diamond Sculls, Colgan of London gained a good victory over the young Australian Kloster. Up to half-way there was little in it, but approaching the Enclosures Kloster appeared to have the rate in hand. Then, near the finish, he faltered and Colgan, sculling strongly, came up and passed him to win by one length in 8min 25secs. Earlier, Sid Rand of Leander beat G. Beech of London, by 2 1/2 lengths in 8min 6secs.
