During a state banquet held for President Tolbert in Peking, on the 20th June, the Chinese Vice Premier Li Hsien-nien denounced the role of the Soviet Union and Cuba in Africa. Soviet, Cuban Mongolian and Eastern European diplomats walked out in protest. Mr. Li said Cuba played the role of a mercenary in Africa and that the Soviet Union was intent upon splitting and weakening the Movement of Non-Aligned Nations.

Background: In China, the President of Liberia, Dr. William Richard Tolbert, has met Chairman Hua Kuo-feng in Peking, the Chinese capital. President Tolbert is the first Liberian head of state in visit Asia. He spent much of his stay in China, discussing African affairs with the Chinese leaders.
SYNOPSIS: President Tolbert, accompanied by his deputy Foreign Minister, Siafa Sherman was met by Chairman Hua, the Chinese Vice-Premier Li Hsien-nien and Foreign minister Hua Hua. During his visit, the liberian president also travelled to Shanghai and toured the lake district around Hangohow. He attended several state banquets, both in Peking and in the provinces, and visited local factories.
Chairman Hua told President Tolbert that the hoped the summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to be held in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in July, would be a success. He said African countries should unite to fight foreign interference. In reply, President Tolbert thanked China for supporting African nations in the past and said the intervention of world powers in African affairs was detrimental both to Africa and the African people. He added that Africa must "handle its own affairs" but stressed that he considered his meeting with Chairman Hua to be of great importance in the development of closer relations between China and Liberia.
