Background: Autumn and winter fashions make their official entry on the Paris fashion scene during the coming week. The house of Nina Ricci previewed some of its latest creations at the weekend, and surprised with a series of variations on a dominant colour -- black.
Ricci uses black from morning-wear to evening dress. Future sociologists may feel black is symbolic of the mood of austerity currently sweeping European capitals. But Ricci tries to contradict the traditional sombre associations of the colour: "It's a light-hearted black, brightened up by lively use of detail and subsidiary colours," was the verdict of one Paris fashion writer.
Taffeta is greatly favoured for evening wear and use is made of two cunningly opposed styles: close fitting gowns contrasted with full, flowing mantles.
SYNOPSIS: Paris fashion houses officially turn their attention towards the coming autumn and winter season this week. ???ere, it's Nine Ricci forecasting a black winter ahead. Black dominates the colour-spectrum -- used here in a blazer over a calf-length skirt.
Black for evening wear, too. In this collection, Ricci cunningly contrasts two opposed styles -- full, flowing mantles over close fitting evening gowns and outfits.
Black and beige combined in a wool jacket over contrasting tan skirt. Note the use of black accessories. There's nothing sombre about Ricci's use of the colour, even though future commentators may link it with the current wave of austerity sweeping Europe. But in this collection, black is livened up by the skilful blend of detail and subsidiary colour.
Finally, a stunning contrast -- an evening gown called Romantique. Ricci greatly favours taffeta for evening wear for the coming season. Here it's mingled with shot silk, imprinted with clusters of roses. A gorgeous antidote to the dark winter days ahead.
