Background: PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OF SENEGAL VISITED THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTRE AT BAMBEY ON WEDNESDAY AS PART OF HIS PLAN TO GET FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF SENEGAL'S PROGRESS IN AGRICULTURE. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED ON HIS VISIT TO THE CENTRE BY THE MINISTER OF RURAL ECONOMICS, M. JEAN COLIN, AND THE MINISTER FOR PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, M. HABIB THIAM.

THE PRESIDENT WAS WELCOMED TO THE CENTRE BY ITS MANAGER, M. SAUGER, WHO SAID HE WAS VERY MOVED BY THE VISIT BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE DIDN'T REALISE THAT THE SCIENTIST LIKES ENCOURAGEMENT AS MUCH AS ANY MAN. M. SAUGER SAID THAT 23 SCIENTISTS AND 19 SENIOR TECHNICIANS WORKED AT THE CENTRE AND ITS DISTRICT STATIONS.

MOST OF THE SCIENTISTS, HE SAID, WERE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES BUT IT WAS HOPED THAT THE WORK WOULD EVENTUALLY BE DONE BY SENEGALESE SCIENTISTS. THE COMPLEX OF THE CENTRE AND ITS DISTRICT STATIONS EMPLOYED A TOTAL OF UP TO 800 PEOPLE.
