Background: President-elect John Kennedy announced in New York, Dec 7, that Arizona lawyer Stewart Udall - father of six children - will be his Secretary of the Interior. The appointment was given from the Senator's New York hotel, where throughout the day a string of visitors including the United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjoeld, had talks with Mr. Kennedy.

Udall is the present Democratic Representative for Arizona. The 40-year old Tucson lawyer risked his political future before the Democratic Convention by supporting Senator Kennedy.

As Secretary of the Interior he will have special responsibility for the Indians, in whom he has always taken a special interest. He will be the first Secretary of the Interior from Arizona.
