Background: A BOAC DELEGATION ARRIVED IN JOHANNESBURG
EARLIER THIS WEEK TO DETERMINE WHETHER ITS LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH THREE AFRICAN AIRLINES SHOULD CONTINUE IN VIEW OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS.

THE MEETING IS CONSIDERING THE AIR POOL WITH SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS, CENTRAL AFRICAN AIRWAYS AND EAST AFRICAN AIRWAYS.

THE DEVELOPMENTS ARE SOUTH AFRICA'S BANNING OF EAST AFRICAN AIRWAYS, HER ORDER SEALING "ESCAPE ROUTES" TO AND FROM THE THREE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION TERRITORIES, AND THE BANNING OF SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS BY THE MAJORITY OF AFRICAN INDEPENDENT STATES.

A BOAC SPOKESMAN IN JOHANNESBURG HAS COMMENTED THAT THEY ARE CONSIDERING ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO SOUTH AFRICA, THE MIDDLE EAST AND ADEN TO OFFSET AN AIR BLOCKADE BY AFRICAN STATES."HOWEVER," HE SAID, "WE HOPE WE CAN KEEP OPEN THE PRESENT ROUTES OPERATED BY OURSELVES AND OUR PARTNERS OF LONG-STANDING.
