    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA.

Indian leaders, including President Zail Singh and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, gathered at the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi on January 30, to mark the 35th anniversary of the death of the nation's founder. As India mourned Mahatma Gandhi's death, the British-made film of his life was going on commercial release for the first time. The film, which has won several international awards, has been generally well received in India. At Delhi's cinemas, people lined up on January 28 to see it and 'house full' notices appeared at some performances.
