Background: IN JAPAN THE ELECTORS HAVE GONE TO THE POLLS (SAT. DEC.27) TO ELECT THE GOVERNMENT TO LEAD THE COUNTRY INTO THE 1970s. THE VOTERS GAVE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. EISAKU SATO, A CRUSHING VICTORY, SUPPORT HIS PRO-AMERICAN POLICIES.

THE VOTERS GAVE MR. SATO'S LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY AN INCREASED MAJORITY OF SOME 16 SEAS, - MAKING A TOTAL OF NEARLY 290 IN THE 486 SEAT LOWER HOUSE. THE ELECTION WAS A CRIPPLING BLOW FOR THE MAJOR OPPOSITION PARTY, WHICH LOST MORE THAN 40 SEATS. THE BUDDHIST-BACKED PARTY ALMOST DOUBLED ITS STRENGTH AND THE MINORITY COMMUNIST TREBLED ITS REPRESENTATION.

FOR THE 68-YEAR-OLD PRIME MINISTER THIS WILL BE HIS THIRD TERM IN POWER. HIS PARTY HAS RULED IN VARIOUS FORMS THROUGHOUT THE POSTWAR PERIOD. MR. SATO GAMBLED - AND WON - A CONVINCING VICTORY WITH HIS STAUNCHLY PRO-AMERICAN POLICIES.
