    Background: A conference on the relationships between African and French languages opened in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on Wednesday (24 March). It was officially opened by the President of Senegal, M. Leopold Senghor.

    About 100 delegates for Belgium, Ivory Coast, Zaire, Congo, Madagascar, Cameroun, Morocco, Benin, Canada, the Central African Republic, Mali, Mauritania, and France attended the conference.

    They were examining the question of contacts between African and French languages and the experiments and work already done in the field in Africa, Europe and the United States of America. The delegates were also studying university research and its application in the teaching of the languages.

    The conference was presided over by M. Joseph Hanse, the Chairman of the International Council of the French Language.

    SYNOPSIS: The senegal National Assembly building in Dakar on Wednesday as Senegal President Leopold Senghor arrived to officially open a conference on the possible relationships between African and the French languages. About 100 delegates form several African countries, France, Belgium and Canada attended the conference in the Senegal capital.

    M. Joseph Hanse, the Chairman of the International Council of the French Language, presided over the conference sessions.

    The delegates examined the question of contacts between African languages and the French language, and discussed experiments and work already performed in the field in Africa, Europe and the United States of America.

    They also studied university research into the contacts between the language and the application of the work in the teaching of African and French languages. Countries represented at the conference include Ivory Coat, Zaire, Congo, Madagascar, Cameroun, Morocco, Benin, Mali, Mauritania, and the Central African Republic.
