Note on MUTE: This is first time this American light sideless truck was seen by British army. These Mules were found very good on rough ground where they had advantages over more conventional vehicles. They are easily transportable - 4 or 5 men can lift them bodily, and easier to maintain.

Background: THE PICTURESQUE MOUNT KINABALU IN NORTH BORNEO AND THE STEAMY JUNGLES IN THE PLAINS PROVIDE THE SETTING AND THE CHALLENGE TO THIS SEATO AMPHIBIOUS TASK FORCE.

ASSEMBLED IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA "SOMEWHERE" OFF THE NORTH BORNEO COAST ARE 24 SHIPS OF SEATO NATIONS CONVEYING 3,000 TROOPS. UNITED STATES MARINES AND BRITISH SHERWOOD FORESTERS COMING TOGETHER IN A SEATO EXERCISE FOR THE FIRST TIME.

AT ZERO HOUR, THE FIRST WAVE TO MARINES GO ASHORE ON GIANT LANDING VEHICLES - THE LVT 5. THE U.S. NAVY CALLS THEN "AMTRAKS". BUT A CORRESPONDENT COVERING THE EXERCISE APTLY DESCRIBED THEM AS "ALLIGATORS" PLOUGHING THROUGH THE SURF.

WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, THESE CRAFTS ARE CAPABLE OF CARRYING TROOPS AND SUPPLIES INTO ENEMY TERRITORY AT 20 to 30 MILES PER HOUR IN ONE SLASHING THRUST OVER THE ROUGHEST TERRAIN --- AND THEN THEY ARE CONVERTED INTO CAMOUFLAGED COMMAND POSTS.

THE MARINES AND SHERWOOD FORESTERS ARE DEPLOYED TO STORM TWO BEACHES AND DESTROY "ENEMY" TROOPS WHO ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE INFILTRATED INTO THE AREA.

MEANWHILE, PARATROOPERS WERE LANDED TO ACT AS PATHFINDERS FOR THE HELICOPTERS BRINGING IN TROOPS INTO THE INTERIOR. THEIR ROLE IS TO CHECK THE AREA FOR ANY TRACE OF THE "ENEMY" AND THEN SEAL IT OFF TO PREVENT THE "ENEMY" DISPUTING THE LANDING.

AIR COVER THROUGHOUT THE OPERATION WAS PROVIDED BY U.S. JET FIGHTERS.

THE BULL DOZER TOO IS MAKING ITS WAY TO THE BEACH UNDER ITS OWN STEAM. AS A PRETHOUGHT SOME OF THE CRAFTS HAD CARRIED IRON
MESH TRACK TO BE USED AS A DRIVEWAY IN DEEP MUD OR VERY LOOSE SAND. JUST TO AVOID A BREAKDOWN OF THIS SORT. (THE JEEP BEING DRIVEN BY CRANE).

WITHIN AN HOUR THE ENTIRE TASK FORCE OF 3,000 MEN HAD LANDED AND SPREAD OUT. GURKHA ENGINEERS AND ARTILLERY WERE SLASHING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE MATTED JUNGLE.

MEANWHILE, THE ADVANCE POST WAS ALREADY SETTING UP COMMUNICATIONS.

INSIDE THE JUNGLE, AN AMERICAN OFFICER BRIEFED THE COMMANDERS AND OBSERVERS ON THE NEXT PHASE OF THE OPERATION. THERE WERE FILIPINOS, AMERICANS, AUSTRALIANS AND BRITISH OFFICERS --- ALL ACTING WITH THE COHESION AS IF THEY WERE DRAWN FROM A SINGLE UNIT!
THE FAMOUS BRITISH ARMY INSTITUTION OF "CHAR" WAS NOT FORGOTTEN AND THE MARINES FOR THE FIRST TIME WERE INITIATED INTO THIS EXCLUSIVE CLUB. THE U.S. MARINES HAD EARLIER BEEN ISSUED BRITISH RATIONS AND ENJOYED IT ----- ANOTHER GET TOGETHER IN THE REMOTE BORNEO JUNGLES.

AS THE EXERCISE CODENAMES "SADDLE-UP" CAME TO A CLOSE, IT WAS VERY CLEAR THAT IT HAD DEMONSTRATED HOW SEATO POWER COULD BE MOBILISED QUICKLY TO DEAL WITH SNEAK INFILTRATION IN ANY MEMBER TERRITORY.

THE EXERCISE ALSO DEMONSTRATED THE EXTRAORDINARY ADAPTABILITY AND EFFICIENCY OF MODERN ARMOURED FORCES.
