Background: "SEALS" TRAVEL BY SEA, LAND AND AIR: THEY'RE TRAINED FOR UNCONVENTIONAL OPERATIONS: AND THEY'RE CLASSIFIED BY THE U.S. NAVY AS A COMBINATION FROGMAN, PARATROOPER AND COMMANDO. IN FACT, A MEMBER OF A SEAL TEAM IS AN EXPERT AT ALL THREE ROLES.

THIS FILM SHOWS, IN A DEMONSTRATION, HOW THE SEALS OPERATE IN THE MYRIAD WATERWAYS, PADDY FIELDS AND JUNGLES OF SOUTH VIETNAM. THEY WORK FROM THEIR BASE AT NHA-BE ON THE SAIGON RIVER, TEN MILES (16 KMS) FROM THE CAPITAL.

ALL SEALS ARE VOLUNTEERS SELECTED FROM THE NAVY'S HIGHLY-TRAINED UNDERWATER DEMOLITION TEAMS. THEY MUST BE QUALIFIED PARACHUTE JUMPERS. PROFICIENT IN AT LEAST ONE FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND EXPERTS IN ALL TYPES OF HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT.

WITH ALL THIS AND TRAINING IN RECONNAISSANCE, DEMOLITION AND SEARCH AND RESCUE WORK, SEALS ARE ABLE TO OPERATE WITH LITTLE SUPPORT AND IN RESTRICTED AREAS.

THE FIRST SEAL UNITS WERE COMMISSIONED IN 1962 AND AT PRESENT MORE THEN 100 SEALS ARE WITH U.S. PACIFIC FLEET.
