Background: The city of Karachi in Pakistan has been voted the dirtiest city in the world. The doubtful honour was bestowed upon Karachi by the World Bank, at a recent meeting in Washington.
Calcutta was rated second dirtiest followed by Manila, Lagos, Ojakarta, and Bangkok. Singapore was considered the best example of a developing capital city.
Reaction in Pakistan has been swift. President Bhutto has announced that he will make an extensive tour of the city this month, to see the situation for himself.
In an editorial in the Karachi Sun, the city authorities and the water and electricity supply agencies are sharply criticised.
