Background: MAJDAL SHAMS, HADAR AND JUBBATA EL KHASHAB, SYRIA

The United Nations peacekeeping force in the demilitarised zone of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights is maintaining a state of alert while the Security Council attempts to draft a resolution on Israel's annexation decision on 14 December, 1981. The 12-hundred man UN contingent is also attempting to cool tempers which have risen since Israel intensified its military patrols along the buffer zone border. The Druze town of Majdal Shams, currently under Israeli armed forces administration has a present population of 5,000 people and those who have remained are described by the TelAviv government as conducting their lives "as normal". Both Hadar and Jubbata el Khashab are in the UN demilitarised buffer zone.
