    THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT AN ARMY BARRACKS IN AN ATHENS SUBURB -- THE SITE WHERE GOVERNMENT TROOPS, WITH BRITISH ASSISTANCE, REPULSED A BID BY FORCES OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT AND THE NATIONAL POPULAR LIBERATION ARMY TO TAKE OVER ATHENS.

    IT WAS THIS BATTLE WHICH TRIGGERED THE BLOODY CIVIL WAR. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WERE KILLED AS IT RAGED UNTIL 1949 WHEN THE HARD-PRESSED INSURGENTS ABANDONED OPEN HOSTILITIES.
