    Background: THE SHIHMAN DAM IN NORTHERN TAIWAN-REPUTED TO BE THIRD LARGEST IN THE WORLD AND THE LARGEST IN THE FAR EAST, - HAS JUST BEEN COMPLETED. IT'S THE FIRST MULTI-PURPOSE WATER DEVELOPMENT SCHEME UNDERTAKEN BY THE TAIWAN GOVERNMENT IN ITS EFFORTS TO MAKE THE COUNTRY SELF-SUFFICIENT.

    THE DAM, WHICH IS 500 FEET HIGH, HAS CREATED A LAKE SOME 10 MILES LONG. THE LAKE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA WILL BECOME A FISH AND WILD LIFE PRESERVE. IT WILL ALSO BE DEVELOPED AS A TOURIST AN RECREATIONAL RESORT.

    THE WHOLE PROJECT HAS SO FAR COST 80 MILLION DOLLARS - MUCH OF 17 CONTRIBUTED BY THE UNITED STATES. THE GENERATORS WILL PRODUCE 90,000 KILOWATTS, AND NEARLY 140,000 ACRES OF FARM LAND WILL BENEFIT FROM THE IMPROVED FLOOD CONTROL AND IRRIGATION.

    SHIHMAN MEANS "STONE GATE" IN CHINESE.
